Description: The growth process of reduced ceria in a form of epitaxial layers on Cu(111) has been thoroughly studied by electron based diffraction and spectroscopy techniques. New phases of reduced ceria, presenting an unprecedented model systems, have been discovered.

Description: The thesis focused on the effect of ex situ preparation of ceria films on the conclusions inferred from ultra high vacuum analysis techniques about the growth properties and stoichiometry by comparing samples prepared ex situ and in situ. Exposition to air has been found to have non-trivial effect on the studied properties.
